For nearly three decades, I've worked alongside students, teachers, and schools with one goal: helping learners experience the moment when math finally makes sense.
One belief has shaped everything I do:

When students can see numbers, patterns, and relationships, they begin to understand mathematics rather than simply memorize it. That understanding builds confidence, curiosity, and a willingness to tackle new challenges.
That idea became the foundation for Simply the Math.
This book wasn't born in a research lab. It grew from thousands of hours in real classrooms with real children facing real challenges. As a teacher, mathematics consultant, and school principal, I've worked with students across many grades and supported educators throughout Ontario. Again and again, I watched the same thing happen — when mathematics became visual, students who once believed they "weren't good at math" began to understand.
The most common thing I hear from teachers after experiencing these strategies is simple:
"Why wasn't I taught math this way?"
That question has stayed with me.
I don't believe there's only one right way to teach mathematics. Students think differently, learn differently, and solve problems differently. Simply the Math is built on the belief that learners deserve multiple ways to understand numbers and operations. Visual models, patterns, and hands-on representations that let each student find what works for them. That's what equitable mathematics instruction looks like.
I often compare learning math to building a house. You need to know how to swing a hammer before the walls go up. Strong number sense creates the foundation for everything that follows: fractions, algebra, problem solving, higher-level thinking. When students understand the basics, they approach complexity with confidence rather than anxiety.
My hope is simple.
I want every child to experience the joy of understanding mathematics. I want every teacher to have strategies that make learning more meaningful. And I want students to discover that math isn't something to fear — it's something to explore.
